WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Brock Lesnar threatens Roman Reigns, smashes Alpha Academy

With SummerSlam drawing near, Brock Lesnar returned to WWE on Monday night, opening Raw with a promo. By the time all was said and done, Lesnar had once again left bodies lying and issued a violent warning to Roman Reigns ahead of their Last Man Standing match for the undisputed universal championship.

Lesnar’s promo was interrupted by Paul Heyman, Theory and Alpha Academy. While all involved issued their own threats to Lesnar, it was Alpha Academy who decided to involve themselves physically. They would pay a violent price for their decision.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Sames Auto Arena in Laredo, Texas.

Brock Lesnar threatens Roman Reigns, destroys Alpha Academy

Brock Lesnar kicked off the show with an in-ring promo. Lesnar said that Roman Reigns has been “high on the hog” since beating him at WrestleMania. Lesnar then called Reigns a hog and said that he slaughtered hogs on his farm every single day. Lesnar was then interrupted by Paul Heyman. Heyman said the Last Man Standing rules for Lesnar vs. Reigns at SummerSlam clearly made Lesnar the favorite because Reigns beats people by being a better wrestler, but Lesnar deals in destruction. Heyman then said that Reigns would shove his hand up Lesnar’s ass and pull out his heart.

Theory then interrupted, saying that he still planned to cash in his Money in the Bank contract on whoever wins the match between Reigns and Lesnar. Alpha Academy were out next and Chad Gable and Otis attempted to attack Lesnar only to be quickly taken out by Lesnar, who eventually used the ring steps on both men, then attacked both with a steel chair. Lesnar finished his statement with an F-5 on Otis through the commentary table.

If there’s one thing WWE has done well for years, it’s present Brock Lesnar as a force of nature. Some of the promo work here was odd, especially between Lesnar and Heyman. But babyface Lesnar playing to the crowd still feels fairly fresh and interesting and he seems to be having fun with it. Where the segment truly worked was bringing out Alpha Academy as cannon fodder. Otis is a big man, so letting Lesnar hit him with the F-5 gives one of those big, splashy moments Lesnar does so well. This didn’t really do much to advance a Lesnar vs. Reigns story nobody really wants, but it did do well at allowing Lesnar to be Lesnar. Grade: B

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Finn Balor def. Rey Mysterio via pinfall after hitting the Coup de Grace. The match came after Rey and Dominik Mysterio were confronted by The Judgment Day, with Balor and Damian Priest suggesting Dominik should join their cause before calling Rey a bad father.
  • Raw Women’s Championship — Carmella def. Bianca Belair (c) via count out when Belair was distracted by Becky Lynch at ringside. Before the match, Lynch demanded she receive a title shot against the winner but couldn’t stop herself from getting involved in the end. Belair retained the title as you can’t win a championship via count out.
  • AJ Styles & Ezekiel def. The Miz & Ciampa via disqualification when Ciampa refused to stop attacking Styles as instructed by the referee. Before the match, Miz again appealed for Logan Paul to team with him at SummerSlam.
  • Alexa Bliss & Asuka def. Nikki ASH & Doudrop via pinfall after Bliss hit Nikki ASH with a DDT.
  • The Usos & Omos def. The Street Profits & R-Truth via pinfall after Omos hit Angelo Dawkins with a chokebomb. R-Truth was angling to be the guest referee for the Usos and Street Profits rematch at SummerSlam when Omos entered the picture for an impromptu six-man tag match.
  • Riddle & Bobby Lashley def. Seth Rollins & Theory via pinfall after Riddle hit Theory with an RKO. Dolph Ziggler returned in the middle of the match, sitting at ringside until he helped shove Theory’s feet off the ropes during an illegal pin. That set up Riddle to hit the match-ending RKO. After the match, Ziggler hit Theory with a superkick as the show went off the air.
