Margot Robbie has been seen as Barbie in many set leaks, but the actress says the attention has been humiliating and mortifying.
Although Margot Robbie has gone on record several times to discuss how unexpected her Barbie movie will be, it seems that being photographed and filmed while shooting the movie has proved to be a “mortifying” experience for the Suicide Squad star. It has come to be expected that any movie production that takes to the streets to film scenes will gain the attention of passers-by and paparazzi, and when you are dressed in shocking pink Lycra, then it certainly attracts a lot of attention. Robbie appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon when the subject of Barbie came up. Talking about the leaked images and videos, she said:
“I can’t tell you how mortified we were, by the way. We look like we’re like laughing and having fun, but we’re dying on the inside. Dying. I was like, this is the most humiliating moment of my life. I mean, I knew that we had some exteriors to shoot in LA I knew once you were doing exteriors, you’re gonna get papped. There’s probably going to be a little crowd of people who are going to take notice because, “You know, we stand out a little bit in those outfits. So I knew there was going to be a little bit of attention, and probably some photos would get out there, but not like it did. It was like mad. It was like.” hundreds of people watching all the time.”
Simu Liu Recently Praised Robbie and the Barbie Movie
Margot Robbie has claimed from way back in 2020 that the Barbie movie would “subvert expectations,” and while the leaks from the set have seemed to show exactly the kind of Barbie character you would expect, it is clearly the story that will make the movie stand out. That is something that Robbie’s co-star Simu Liu has also alluded to as he has praised both the actress and the movie, which he said made him question how they got Mattel to sign it off. He previously said:
“It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read. I think it’ll surprise a lot of people because I think a lot of people get cynical when they see Mattel or they see Barbie. The first thought I had after reading the script was how did the hell did they get Mattel to sign off on this, because this is not the kind of movie that corporate overlords sign off on. This is the type of movie that I love, unabashedly. It’s smart, it’s subversive, and it’s meta, and it makes fun of itself. How did they understand it enough to green light it? I think that’s props to not only Greta but also to Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley who produced it.”
While there is still very little known about the movie’s plot, there have been rumors that it will see Barbie being self-aware of the “Barbie World” she lives in and wanting to break out of it, but beyond that, we are still waiting on the official synopsis being released. Currently, Barbie is set to be released on July 21, 2023.
